Black Bear Hunting?

January 28, 2008 by: Zach

Question: Mark Milsaps from Asheville, NC asks:  ”Dear Outdoorsmen, I was wondering what was a good caliber rifle for Black bear hunting?”

Mark, I would use no less than a .270 caliber.  Black bears can be very resilient animals.  They are also very dangerous to hunt.  When you take your shot, make it count!  Aim for the vitals area or the head.  Be ready to put another round in the chamber immediately after your first shot.  Bears have been known to charge hunters when they are in distress, especially when being chased by dogs.  I would refrain from dog hunting if possible.  Not only is it detrimental to other wild game, it puts the hunters life at greater risk of injury or death.
